š§āØ Tinkering: The Art of Learning with Your Hands
Hello! Iām Radhaāpsychologist, mother, and founder of Little Makers, a process-art studio inspired by Reggio Emilia, born in 2015 in Amsterdam. But above all, I am passionate about tinkeringāthat magical way of learning with our hands, exploring, taking things apart, and building without fear of failure.
Today, I want to tell you why tinkering is so much more than just playing with loose partsāit's a gateway to creativity, problem-solving, and self-confidence. Are you ready to dive in? š§āØš
Now, tell me the truth⦠Have you ever seen a child (or even an adult) take something apart just to see how it works?Ā š§ Or test a thousand different ways to build a tower, even if it keeps falling?
Well, thatās tinkering.
Tinkering is that natural urge to make and unmake, to try without fear of failing, and to learn through exploration.Ā Itās not about following instructions or reaching a specific result.Ā Itās a journey of discovery, where every material and every tool whispers new possibilities.
At Little Makers, our creative workshops and after-school art programsĀ have a special space for tinkering, where children explore, experiment, and solve problems without fear of making mistakes.
So, are you ready to bring more tinkering into your childās life? šāØ
š Why is tinkering so important for creative development?
Besides being fun (and, letās be honest, a great excuse to get messy š¤©), tinkering develops golden skillsĀ that are essential for kids:
š¹ Creativity & problem-solvingĀ š§©: How many ways can you make a wheel spin? There's only one way to find outāby experimenting!
š¹ Critical thinking & independenceĀ š§ : Thereās no one saying, āDo it this way.ā Kids make their own decisions, test their ideas, and adjust as they go.
š¹ Confidence & perseveranceĀ šŖ: They learn that mistakes are not failures, but part of the discovery process.
š¹ Technical skills & motor coordinationĀ š©: Handling tools, assembling pieces, tightening screws⦠All of this enhances their dexterity and understanding of how things work.
Our tinkering workshops and after-school programs in Barcelona and MadridĀ are designed to nurture all these skills in a safe and inspiring environment.
⨠Tinkering at Little Makers: Where creativity takes shape
At Little Makers, tinkering is one of the most exciting experiences within our art and creativity workshops for kids. We integrate it into our after-school programs and creative workshops in Barcelona, Madrid, and Amsterdam, where children are free to experiment with real tools and age-appropriate materials.
š ļø Tinkering is chaos... but the good kind!
Letās be honest: tinkering is neither tidy nor predictable.Ā It's like trying to cook without measuring the ingredientsāsometimes you end up with something delicious, sometimes with a total disaster, but you always learn something along the way!Ā š
Children in our tinkering workshops in Barcelona and MadridĀ donāt follow rigid stepsāthey explore freely. They might start with one idea and end up with something completely different. And thatās exactly the point!Ā Because what matters isnāt the final result, but the journey.
š What exactly is tinkering?
Tinkering is the art of learning with your hands.Ā Itās about free exploration of materials and experimenting without a fixed goal. Itās not about following instructions but discovering solutions through trial and error.
A tinkerer is someone who experiments with materials and ideas to understand their possibilities and, through iteration, refines and improves their solutions.
š ļø What do we do in our tinkering workshops?
Our little inventors have complete freedom to exploreĀ different materials, from loose parts and recycled objects to natural elements. There is no single "right" wayājust endless creative possibilities!
š” Some of the activities we love at our tinkering station in our workshops and camps:
ā Building structures: Constructing, assembling, taking apart, and starting over.ā Problem-solving challenges: Using everyday objects in unconventional ways to solve challenges.ā Exploring mechanisms: Gears, pulleys, and elements that work with movement.
šØ And the best part?Ā Every child approaches it differently. Some test things out quickly, while others carefully plan their every move. Both ways of creating are valid and amazing!
