Why Is It So Hard to Find a Summer Camp in Barcelona in June? A Guide for International Families
Planning a family trip to Barcelona in June? You may be surprised to discover that finding a summer camp for your children in early June is harder than expected. The reason is simple: local school holidays often begin later than they do in the United States and other countries.

Why are summer camps in Barcelona hard to find in early June?
In Barcelona, many children are still at school during the first three weeks of June. Traditional summer day camps, known as casals d’estiu or casales de verano, usually begin when the local school year ends, around late June. The Sant Joan celebrations on June 23 and 24 also mark the beginning of the summer season for many families. This does not mean there are no camps in early June, but the choice is much smaller.
What if your child’s summer vacation starts earlier?
Families visiting from the United States, Canada and parts of Latin America may have different school calendars. Some come on holiday, others are in Barcelona for a temporary work assignment, considering a move abroad, or traveling and working remotely as digital nomads. They need a meaningful daytime experience for their children while they explore, work or settle into the city.
An early June summer art camp designed for international families
Little Makers has worked with international families for years through creative programs in Barcelona and Amsterdam. We created our Early Summer Art Camp in Barcelona specifically for children visiting before local school holidays begin. In 2027, the program runs from June 7 to July 2 for children ages 6 to 11.
Our approach is inspired by Reggio Emilia and process art. Children paint, construct, invent, experiment with materials and collaborate on imaginative projects. The focus is on exploration and creative thinking, not making identical crafts.
Will my child feel comfortable if they only speak English?
Yes. English is widely spoken during our Early Summer Camp because many participating children are international visitors. We have welcomed many North American families, as well as families from Latin America, Europe and elsewhere. Our educators communicate in English and Spanish, and art helps children connect even when they have different first languages.

Can my child discover Spanish language and Barcelona culture?
Absolutely. Some families hope their children will encounter Spanish during their stay. Our Spanish-speaking educators can introduce words and conversations naturally and adapt to children who want more Spanish interaction. Creative projects also offer opportunities to discover the city’s art, culture and local traditions. Little Makers is an international art camp, however, not a formal Spanish-language immersion course.
Who attends an international summer camp in Barcelona?
Our early summer groups bring together children whose families are vacationing, relocating, temporarily living abroad or traveling around Europe. Meeting children from different countries is part of the experience. Many share English as a common language while bringing their own cultures, interests and stories into the atelier.
What changes in July and August?
After local schools finish, our summer art camp becomes a meeting place for both Barcelona-based children and international visitors. Spanish and Catalan become more present alongside English. This multilingual mix reflects Barcelona itself and makes the creative experience particularly rich.
Why Gràcia is a great neighborhood for visiting families
Little Makers Atelier is located at Carrer del Torrent de l’Olla 177, in Gràcia, a distinctive Barcelona neighborhood known for its squares, independent shops, cafés and local character. Families can explore the area before or after camp, and it is connected to the rest of the city.
